There Is No Cloud

 You never know what’s listening….

As a sales rep for SmartTech, the world’s largest home automation company, Cameron Caldwell’s job is to keep customers happy… and buying.  That means the current bane of her existence is a rival company’s home  AI device, the HomeTech Hub. Her customers want to use the HTH’s voice commands to control the electronics she’s selling them—and if she wants to keep selling to them, she needs to make sure that happens. Why can’t they just ask it the weather and be happy with that?

While attempting to get tech support for one of her clients, Cameron finds something strange in a HomeTech Hub and is immediately curious. Is there something about the product no one’s supposed to know? But when people start dying, she knows something far more complex is going on,  and she’s determined to find out what the technology the whole world has let into their homes actually does.

As Cameron digs deeper into something she never thought would be possible, she starts to wonder what she’s gotten herself into… and whether she’ll be able to get out.

Cameron reached into her inside jacket pocket and pulled out just the front page of Sunday’s New York Post. With the heading, she’d seen and handed it to him.

“Wow, Matt Rodriquez is dead. That’s crazy, but it still doesn’t explain your level of paranoia.”

“He was murdered, Casey, and I don’t want to jump to conclusions, but what if it has something to do with that extra chip? The way I see it there are two options here. One, it’s an isolated thing. Some PI put it in there to catch a cheating spouse or something. No big deal, right? But what if it’s not? How many calls do you get a day about the HomeTech Hubs not integrating into the system? What if the ones that don’t work with SmartTech are all units with this extra piece in it, which means it’s much more widespread?”

She stopped pacing and stubbed out her cigarette and immediately lit another one sitting down across from him at the table.

“I feel like those three conspiracy nuts from the X-files, but, Casey, these things have a lot of info in them. You could do some serious damage if you had an all-access pass to people’s technology. Seriously, think about it for a second. What couldn’t you do with this?”

He sat for a minute, smoking and thinking before he replied.

“The Lone Gunmen.”

“What?”

“From the X-files, that’s who you mean, The Lone Gunmen.”

“No, there were three of them,” she said slowly as if talking to a child.

“Yeah, The Lone Gunmen” he insisted.

Frustrated she stood up and began pacing again. “Whatever, we’ve suddenly stumbled into the weirdest version of “Who’s on First” ever. Speculation is meaningless. Believe me, I’ve almost driven myself insane this weekend with what ifs. We can’t do anything until we know what it does. Can you find out?
